Evita is based on the historical story of María Eva Duarte de Perón, a poor Argentinian girl who longs for an acting career, fame and fortune. Set in Buenos Aires between 1934-1952, the musical follows Eva on her journey from fatherless child to ambitious actress to becoming the wife of the president of Argentina, worshipped by her people.

With millions of people still utterly devoted to her, Evita continues to appear in public, dazzling her supporters and infuriating her enemies, despite being secretly consumed with terminal cancer. At the end of the musical, she dies, aged 33, resulting in hysterical mourning throughout Argentina.  The events in Evita’s life are presented in song and editorialized on by the show’s narrator, Che.

The musical is famous for a number of songs, including “Oh what a circus!” “Another suitcase in another hall,” “Buenos Aires,” and the show’s signature solo, “Don’t cry for me, Argentina.” For the movie version, a new solo was added for Evita, “You must love me.”
